What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is used to keep patients relaxed and calm throughout the procedure. Dr. Franceschi has a consultation with each patient to discuss the best form of sedation for the individual. He’ll discuss your medical history, reasons why you avoid the dentist, and what procedure you need to be done.

Our office provides two forms of sedation. First, we have nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. Throughout your procedure, you’ll inhale the gas through a nasal mask. The gas reacts immediately and is only active as long as you’re inhaling it. Once the mask is off, so will the effect, and you’ll be able to drive yourself home.

We also offer oral sedation. This comes in pill form and will be taken before you come into the office for your procedure. You’ll be able to pick it up from your pharmacist. Since you’ll be under the effects both before and after the procedure, you’ll need to get a ride to and from the office.

What Conditions is Sedation Dentistry Used For?

One of the most common reasons sedation dentistry is used for patients with dental anxiety. If you have dental anxiety, you may avoid going to the dentist for things like normal checkups. This can make your oral health problems worse, leading to you needing more extensive dental work. To get through multiple procedures especially, sedation is needed. People needing advanced restorative work may need it as well.

If you have sensitive teeth or a bad gag reflex, it may be easier for both you and the dentist to use sedation. They may also recommend sedation dentistry if you have a high tolerance for local anesthetic and don’t stay numb throughout dental work. If you have a fear of needles or drills, sedation can be used for procedures where those things will be involved.

Sedation is also extremely useful for patients with movement disorders or disabilities, as well as children. With certain disorders, it’s literally impossible for someone to stay still. This can mess up the dentist while they’re doing certain procedures. Children may also have an issue with sitting still. To avoid hurting the patient or messing up the procedure, it may be recommended that sedation is used.
