Restore Your Smile with a Tooth-Colored Filling

When left untreated, tooth decay can cause widespread oral health issues. Treating a cavity early on with a dental filling can help prevent more serious concerns from arising. At Smiles of Trinity Dentistry in New Port Richey, FL, we offer tooth-colored fillings to restore the health of your teeth without affecting the appearance of your smile. Using non-allergenic, non-toxic composite resin, Dr. Gianni Franceschi can treat areas of decay and restore a stronger, healthier tooth.

Tooth-colored fillings are indistinguishable from natural enamel to all except the most highly trained eyes.

Do I Need a Filling?

In most cases, the only way to identify a cavity is with a special instrument or an x-ray. Decay often exists without any noticeable symptoms until it is fairly progressed. However, some signs include:

  • Tooth pain
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Changes in the appearance of your tooth

Dr. Franceschi will look for any cavities during your regular exam and cleaning. Visiting our office consistently can help us catch decay before it becomes too severe to fix with a simple filling.

During your exam, Dr. Franceschi will check the surface of each tooth using a small mirror. We also recommend x-rays at least once a year to ensure there are no cavities forming between teeth or in other hard-to-see areas.

The Treatment Process

If we find a cavity, we will schedule an appointment to place a filling. Before beginning, we will completely numb the affected tooth and the surrounding areas. Next, Dr. Franceschi will remove all decayed tissue from your tooth.

Our tooth-colored fillings can restore the strength of damaged teeth without impacting the appearance of your smile.

Once the decay is removed, he will clean the area to eliminate any debris or bacteria. Then, he will apply the tooth-colored composite resin in layers and use a special curing light to harden each layer as it is applied. When the space is fully filled, Dr. Franceschi will shape the material and polish it. We will also check your bite to ensure it is unaffected.

The Benefits of Composite Resin

Compared to traditional silver amalgam fillings, composite resin offers a variety of benefits:

  • Improved aesthetics: The resin material can be closely matched to the color of your tooth so the filling blends into your smile rather than causing a grey tint.
  • Conservative treatment: In many cases, less tooth structure needs to be removed for a composite filling than with an amalgam filling.
  • Stronger bond: The composite resin chemically bonds with the tooth's structure, providing a higher level of support.
  • Stabler results: Silver fillings tend to expand and contract with temperature changes, which can damage your tooth over time. In contrast, composite fillings are more stable.

Although the levels of mercury in silver fillings are considered safe by the American Dental Association®, many patients simply prefer not to place metal in their bodies. Composite restorations might also be recommended for patients with metal allergies.
