Regular cleanings and exams with a professional are an essential part of maintaining a healthy smile.

Dental Cleanings

Attending a dental cleaning every six months can improve your oral health and prevent serious issues from developing. If you take good care of your teeth at home, your cleaning should be simple and painless.

During the cleaning, one of our hygienists will:

  • Examine your teeth using a small mirror to check for signs of gum inflammation or other health problems
  • Remove plaque and tartar around the gum line and between your teeth with a specialized tool called a scaler
  • Polish your teeth with a high-powered electric brush and a gritty toothpaste to remove any remaining tartar buildup
  • Floss your teeth to remove any leftover plaque or toothpaste
  • Rinse your mouth to wash out debris

Depending on your needs, we may also perform a fluoride treatment. Professional fluoride can boost your defense against tooth decay between cleanings.

Your hygienist can also give you recommendations on how to better care for your teeth at home, including suggestions for certain tools and techniques. If you wear a removable restoration, such as a denture or retainer, we can clean them in the office, as well.

Dental Exams

Once your cleaning is complete, Dr. Franceschi can perform a comprehensive oral health examination. During the exam, he will:

  • Evaluate your oral hygiene
  • Determine whether you need additional treatments
  • Assess your bite and jaw alignment
  • Identify any risk factors for decay or gum disease
  • Check for signs of oral cancer

Once a year, we will also take x-rays to examine the underlying structures of your smile and check for any areas of decay which are not easily visible.

It is important to discuss any concerns you have about your oral health with Dr. Franceschi during this appointment, such as ill-fitting dentures or tooth pain. Your exam may also involve counseling about diet and other lifestyle factors which can improve the health of your smile and your overall wellbeing.

How Often Do I Need a Cleaning and Exam?

For most patients, we recommend scheduling an appointment at least twice a year. However, if you have diabetes, arthritis, or another condition which puts you at a high risk for oral health issues, Dr. Franceschi may suggest coming into the office more frequently.

At Smiles of Trinity Dentistry, we offer a wide range of preventive services to keep your smile clean, healthy, and beautiful for years to come.

Most dental insurance plans cover cleanings and exams twice a year. Consistent care is the best way to avoid more extensive and expensive restorative procedures. By attending your biannual appointments, you may save yourself time and money in the future.
